Summer At the Reptile, June and July

At the Reading Reptile with Grandma KarenReading Reptile is a funky little children’s bookshop over in Brookside. We discovered via coffee-shop-flyer that they are offering a series of art workshops this summer for elementary-aged children. Unfortunately, they haven’t updated their website in a couple of months, so you’ll need to call or email to confirm times and costs. Phone number is (816) 753-0441 and email address is info@readingreptile.com

Liberty Arts Squared Festival, May 31 and June 1

The 4th Annual Liberty Arts Squared Festival features fine arts and crafts, live entertainment, arts activities for children, and a beer and wine garden on Friday evening.

The visual arts area incorporates two- and three-dimensional fine arts and fine crafts. Media will be juried and displayed in two separate categories: Fine Arts and Crafts. Examples of art that are eligible for the juried selection are:

This is a great opportunity for the Artastic or Creative Crafts badges.

On Friday evening, from 4-9 pm, we will present Jeff Porter, and the great band The Crayons! On Saturday, we will present the Liberty Jazz Ensemble, Jeff Porter, Edge Town, and The Rick Bacus Trio! Consider this for Music Appreciation.

Liberty Arts Squared will have book and poetry readings, and singer/songwriters featured throughout the day on Saturday at the Corbin Theater on the square. Come in to cool off, bring in your lunch or snack, have a seat and enjoy the literary arts and song. Check out the schedule of the day for your favorite or new performing literary artists. This might help with Book Adventurer or Creative Writing.

The Children’s art area of the festival will feature interactive arts activities in the visual arts, literature, musical arts and music-making and performance. The following organizations will be providing children’s art activities:  Martha Lafitte Nature Sanctuary, Oddball Kids, Red Star Studios (clay), Liberty Symphony Orchestra, the Liberty School District will present Dr. Vibrations (the musical petting zoo), and face painting. The activities are set up so that children can become engaged with producing art and viewing demonstrations throughout the children’s area. Activities will be available for all age groups from very young through teen-aged. This will help with Artastic, as well as just be fun!

Holiday Swing Craft Fair, Nov. 4

Craft fairs are easy to come by in the warm-weather months, but they are a little more rare once the weather turns cold. One option we have found is the second annual Holiday Swing, An Indie Craft Fair celebrating the upcoming Holiday Season. There will be over 20 local artists showcasing handmade goods perfect for the upcoming Holidays! Plus, it’s a good opportunity to peek inside the Alexander Majors historic site. http://www.alexandermajors.com/
